This recipe for baked chicken drumsticks is foolproof and so delectable. The skin on the chicken drumsticks becomes nice and crispy while the meat remains moist and juicy.

This is one of those simplistic weeknight meals that most people will scarf down when dinner is ready. Also, cleanup is a breeze since everything is baked in one pan. Serve with your favorite sides and you’ve got a complete meal. Who could ask for anything more?

When it comes to making juicy, flavorful chicken, there’s no need to complicate it like other recipes for chicken might do.

All you must do for this recipe is coat your chicken pieces with a mixture of butter or olive oil and spices, then bake the drumsticks for 50 minutes. That’s it! This cook time results in perfectly cooked and juicy chicken that’s packed with succulent flavor.

For best results, use skin-on, bone-in chicken drumsticks. This specific type of chicken is less likely to dry out during cooking in the oven and will stay moist yet a tad crispy on the outside. So, if you’re looking for a yummy recipe that yields delicious, tender chicken, this baked chicken recipe is for you.

Kids and adults alike usually ADORE chicken drumsticks. After a long day at work or school, chicken drumsticks are easy to eat and pair with a salad, vegetable, and starch. As a child, I grew up coming home to my mother making fried chicken after school.

Fried chicken is hands down mouthwatering. I still love that golden, crispy fried chicken meal occasionally. Though, fried chicken takes longer and has more steps than baked chicken. Since I loved my mother’s fried chicken recipe, I decided to make a variation of it with my baked chicken drumsticks.

I promise, these chicken drumsticks are heavenly tasting and are competitive with those feel-good eating types of fried chicken drumsticks. Luckily, this recipe is easy and has half the calories and cooking steps!

No wonder to see why baked drumsticks are a classic – they’re so dang good. To be totally honest, when I pick up chicken drumsticks from the grocery store I don’t end up doing anything fancy with them because I never want to ruin them by making them too spicy or marinated in something so specific.

Though, if you’re wanting to switch this baked chicken recipe up a bit you totally can do so! There are a ton of baked chicken recipes you can make with drumsticks.

  • 8 Chicken Drumsticks with the Skin. baked-chicken-drumsticks Most chicken drumsticks at the supermarket come in a pack of 8. If not, buy 8 drumsticks for this recipe. If you want to make more than 8, you totally can. Just add more ingredients to yield a larger quantity for the recipe rub/glaze needed for the chicken.
  • Butter or Olive Oil. I tend to use butter for the base of my marinade as it becomes thicker faster and really sticks to the chicken before going in the oven. Butter will even harden the marinade if left out too long. If you only have olive oil – it works too! Olive oil may just be a little runnier. You can also add a mix of olive oil and butter if you’d like the best of both worlds.
  • Spice Mix: Use ¼ of each spice. Spice includes paprika, cayenne, onion powder, garlic powder, and garlic salt. baked-chicken-drumsticks
  • 2 tbsp Ketchup. (My not-so-secret ingredient for this marinade!)
  • Salt and Pepper to Taste. Since I use garlic salt in this spice mix for the marinade, be sure not to use too much salt as it can taste overly salty then. If you do not like garlic salt, leave it out and just use salt.

  1. Turn your oven to 400 degrees to preheat the oven.
  2. Make the marinade/paste. Take all your spices (1 tspn of each) and add them to the butter or olive oil marinade base. Be sure to melt the butter beforehand if you use butter. baked-chicken-drumsticks
  3. Add ketchup to the marinade. Mix in! This should thicken the marinade and make it darker in color.
  4. Brush the marinade on the chicken drumsticks while they are on a baking sheet/pan. Brush both sides of the drumsticks. baked-chicken-drumsticks
  5. Bake drumsticks in the oven for 50 minutes. Check them at 40 mins. If your chicken drumsticks are thicker then bake them for an additional 5-10 minutes. baked-chicken-drumsticks
  6. Sprinkle parsley on top when drumsticks are done baking! When you take the drumsticks out of the oven, sprinkle with chopped parsley before serving. I also recommend serving with some additional rosemary and thyme. baked-chicken-drumsticks

Do I have to bake drumsticks for 50 minutes?

I baked my chicken drumsticks for 50 minutes total. Though, a good rule is to check the drumsticks in the oven at 40 minutes to ensure they aren’t burning or overcooking. They should look lightly golden brown and juicy at 40 minutes. Though, if you smell anything burning on the pan take them out sooner.

Should I cover drumsticks with tin foil?

You do not have to cover the drumsticks with tinfoil in the oven. Doing so may overcook or over-steam them. You can put tin foil over them once they are out of the oven and cooled.

What temperature should baked chicken be?

You know your chicken drumsticks are done when they reach the internal temperature of 165 degrees with. Be sure not to touch the bone with a thermometer as you’ll get another temperature reading.

How to Store Leftover Chicken:

Store leftover chicken drumsticks in the fridge in a sealed food storage container. I use these food containers and swear by them! These will keep the chicken tasting fresh for up to five days in the refrigerator. Reheat chicken in the microwave for one minute and you should have chicken drumsticks that taste just as freshly baked as the first day.

  • Honey Mustard Drumsticks
  • Roasted Jamaican Jerk Chicken Drumsticks
  • Honey BBQ Soy Chicken Drumsticks
  • Buffalo Chicken Drumsticks
  • Baked Ranch Chicken Drumsticks with Bacon Bits

Since this main dish is just protein – I suggest adding a carb, starch, vegetable, or salad for a side dish!

Chicken goes with essentially everything. From pasta to fresh salads, you can’t go wrong here.

The last time I made these baked chicken drumsticks I made these instant-pot mashed potatoes as a side and some green beans. Total homerun.
