CINNAMON ROLL ICING

Cinnamon roll icing is one of the most understated icings out there. I can still remember the first time I had Cinnabon’s cinnamon rolls at our local mall as a child and tasting that nostalgic cinnamon roll icing for the first time. It was such a favorite of mine, there would surely be extra icing in a tiny plastic to-go container just to add more icing on top to my Cinnabon cinnamon roll. After that, like many – I was hooked on this sweet treat.

Nowadays, there’s nothing quite like the smell of cinnamon rolls baking in the oven in the morning with a cup of coffee. Alternatively, coming home to a warm cinnamon roll welcome is always an ideal way to relax after a long day.

The sweet and spicy aroma of cinnamon rolls coming out of the oven is irresistible, and it’s no wonder that cinnamon rolls are a popular breakfast treat for both kids and adults. But what takes cinnamon rolls from good to great? The icing, of course! I’m sure we all also remember glazing cinnamon rolls with the iconic Pillsbury cinnamon roll icing recipe at some point or another. There never seemed to be enough icing in those little Pillsbury cinnamon rolls containers, right?!

CINNAMON ROLL ICING INGREDIENTS + SUBSTITUTIONS

  • 2 tablespoons of butter, softened or melted
  • 1 – 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups of powdered sugar (confectioners’ sugar)
  • 4 tablespoons milk (may use heavy whipping cream or dairy creamer)

CINNAMON ROLL ICING – THINGS YOU’LL NEED

Icing Squeeze bottle There is such a thing as ‘over-glazed’ cinnamon rolls. Remember, we do not want our cinnamon rolls drenched in icing that overpowers the entire taste of the rolls. Instead, drizzle cinnamon roll icing or use a spatula to smear the icing in swirls on the rolls. This is when icing squeeze bottles come in handy! I use a squeeze bottle like this to lightly squeeze out icing onto my cinnamon rolls. It’s also ideal to easily store away extra icing for later.

STEPS HOW TO MAKE THE BEST CINNAMON ROLL ICING

Icing Instructions:

  1. Melt butter. Microwave unwrapped butter in a microwavable bowl for approximately 20-30 seconds.
  2. In a kitchen mixing bowl, combine butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk.
  3. Blend until smooth and pour over aromatic cinnamon rolls cooled off from the oven-and walla!

HOW MUCH ICING DOES THIS CINNAMON ROLL GLAZE YIELD?

This recipe makes enough icing to glaze over approximately 10-12 large cinnamon rolls that are 3-5 inches in diameter or 24 miniature cinnamon rolls which are about 1-3 inches in diameter. If you have some icing leftover, use it for additional dunking and dipping!

CINNAMON ROLL ICING RECIPE TIPS + TRICKS

  • Have your butter soften at room temperature.  You can also put the butter in a microwave-safe bowl and warm it up for 20-30 seconds.
  • Add vanilla, then whisk a second time. After adding in your vanilla extract, whisk the butter and milk mixture until everything is evenly incorporated. Using a whisk is the best way to do this!
  • Slowly incorporate the powdered sugar. We’ve all seen kitchen disasters where flour and powdered sugar end up everywhere. To avoid this, I always recommend adding half of the powdered sugar first. Then, whisk the cinnamon roll icing after each half. Keep whisking the icing until there are no lumps. If you happen to see any air bubbles, don’t worry as these will settle.
  • Keep the cinnamon roll icing at room temperature before glazing onto cinnamon rolls. If you are making the cinnamon rolls simultaneously as well as your icing, keep the icing out at room temperature, so it oozes onto the cinnamon rolls. If you’re making the icing the day ahead, remove it from the fridge and rest it on the counter while the cinnamon rolls rise and bake so it has time to warm up at room temperature and smoothly glide over the cinnamon rolls. If you need your cinnamon roll icing sooner than later after taking it out of the fridge, you may warm it up in the microwave for 15 seconds. This will ensure your cinnamon roll icing melts a little but doesn’t completely melt and become too hot-then it will not adhere to the rolls.
